NEW YORK CITY · GIG WORKER GAME

The city is your workday.

SHIFT is a first-person New York City gig worker game. Choose your transportation, compare offers from several apps, and find out how much you can keep after the miles, waits and costs.

A shift across New York

Work a covered network of neighborhoods in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx, with Roosevelt Island connections and airport jobs at JFK and LaGuardia. Streets, crossings, transit stops and neighborhood details shape the journey.

New shifts start with New York’s current time and the latest available weather report. The city clock then advances with your chosen play speed. Restaurant hours, traffic, available jobs and street activity change through the shift.

The game uses mapped infrastructure and published reference data, alongside authored routes, buildings and events. It is a playable interpretation of the city, not a complete street-by-street replica or a live navigation service.

Choose the work, not the accelerator

Route assist handles movement. You choose the jobs, next stops, routes, transportation and how to handle delays. Cars can take deliveries and, with the for-hire setup, passenger rides. Bikes, e-bikes, scooters, walking and public transit create different costs and tradeoffs.

Delivery work continues beyond the curb. Park or lock up, find the right entrance, collect the correct order, and follow the customer’s handoff instructions. A lobby, walkup, elevator, security desk or confusing hallway can change how long a job takes.

Working several apps can fill quiet time. Accepting jobs with conflicting routes can also cause late deliveries, poor feedback and app deactivation for the shift.

Two ways to play

Shift modes
ModeWhat to expect
1-hour crunchWork 60 game minutes. Accepted jobs can use up to 20 more game minutes of overtime. Play at real time, 4× or 12×.
Free playKeep working without a fixed clock cutoff. Pause and return to your saved shift, or choose End shift when you are done.

Keep track of what you keep

Net earnings are pay and tips minus costs, before tax. Fuel, wear, fares, parking, tolls and incident costs can turn a large offer into a small return. A tip estimate can change. Your trip receipts show what actually happened.

Shifts save to the online leaderboard automatically when connected. Compare qualifying results by net earnings, net per game hour or completed jobs, with separate crunch and free-play boards. You can choose a public nickname and review your own shift history.

Read the controls and first-shift guide, or open SHIFT and choose your setup.

A fictional game using familiar services

Uber, Uber Eats, DoorDash, Lyft and Empower appear by name to make the work understandable. SHIFT is not affiliated with or endorsed by them. Offers, customer interactions, ratings, incidents and enforcement outcomes are fictional gameplay. The game does not book real rides, place orders, make payments or contact emergency services.

Transit, fares, operating hours and other reference details may reflect dated source snapshots. In-game costs and incidents are not financial, legal, safety or travel advice. The game’s Help panel includes further sources and limitations.
